• Four new automatic options added to the S6 Double Cab range
• S6 Automatic now the most affordable automatic entry into the double cab market in SA

Centurion, December 1, 2021: Mahindra has expanded its lifestyle double cab range by offering more automatic models, arriving just in time for long festive season road trips and off-road excursions.

The new Mahindra Pik Up S6 Automatic arrives with a starting price of only R378 999, making it the most affordable automatic bakkie in South Africa. The standard model and a Karoo Edition also join the line-up with rear- or four-wheel drive, adding four models in total to the comprehensive Pik Up range.

Says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa: “Since launching the S11 Automatic and S11 Automatic Karoo models, the demand for our new automatic transmission has far outstripped supply. We are proud to have been able to add the same gearbox to the S6 range to not only alleviate some of the pent-up demand but to extend this lifestyle-friendly transmission to a greater number of buyers.”

All four new additions to the double-cab range are fitted with the same engine and automatic gearbox, which was developed by Mahindra globally with significant input and testing from Mahindra in South Africa.

This means that power is delivered by the proven and trusted mHawk turbodiesel engine with common rail injection. The engine is rated to deliver 103 kW at 3 750 rpm and a healthy 320 Nm all the way from 1 500 rpm to 2 800 rpm.

The Mahindra mHawk engine is well-known and much-loved in South Africa, both for its effortless power delivery and low fuel consumption. Mahindra’s range of engines has become synonymous with good fuel consumption and it received a top 3 position in the Most Efficient Brand category of the WesBank Fuel Economy Tour.

In the automatic models, the fuel consumption has been rated as 9.3 litres/100 km in a combined cycle.

The automatic gearbox was developed in partnership with the global automotive giant Aisin, and it offers six speeds and the option to take over gearshifts by moving the gear selector to the right. For South African models, this gearbox has been mapped perfectly to the power band to offer significant low-end pulling power and higher-speed long distance cruising ability.

The Pik Up S6 Automatic further benefits from the Pik Up range’s comprehensive mechanical resumé. This includes Mahindra’s beloved MLD self-locking rear differential, an 80-litre fuel tank, a 210 mm ground clearance and a maximum tow rating of 2 500 kg.

Other features carried over from the S6 manual model include front fog lamps, the impressive 1 095 kg payload for the 4×2 double cab model (995 kg for the 4×4) and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). Four-wheel drive models are also fitted with a knob-selector for a quick shift between 2H and 4H modes and to low-range.

Inside the cabin, the S6 Automatic model has a comprehensive list of features. These include air conditioning, an audio system with a USB and auxiliary port, cruise control, central locking and electric windows and mirrors. All auto models also have Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as standard.

Mahindra has also added charging points to both the front and rear of the cabin, auto-locking doors, two airbags for the driver and front passenger and ISOFIX seat anchors for the safe fitment of child seats. Other features that are standard across the S6 Automatic Double Cab range include an arm rest for the driver and front passenger and height adjustment for the driver’s seat.

S6 Automatic Karoo

For buyers who would like a more visually striking S6 Automatic with an even higher specification level, Mahindra has added two S6 Automatic Karoo models, with the same option between the 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains. With these Karoo models, Mahindra’s design team has swopped the standard S6 steel wheels with hardened off-road ready alloy rims.

Karoo models also receive a nudge bar, a rear styling bar instead of the bolted-on cab protector and a tonneau cover. The Karoo models further feature colour-coded rear wheel arch mouldings and rain deflectors fitted to the doors. The Mahindra Pik Up S6 Automatic range is available immediately from Mahindra’s comprehensive network of 67 dealers across South and Southern Africa. This network has continued to grow, despite the challenges of the past two years and now cover all major towns, cities and routes.
